Dr Claire Tan

Branding Consultant
Claire is a branding and communications professional with more than two decades of experience traversing government, corporate, academe, and non-profit.

In her 12 years with the Singapore Government, Claire handled diverse portfolios covering communication research, press relations, marketing communications, social media, and nation/country branding. She held positions in the Prime Minister's Office, Ministry of Defence, Ministry of Culture, Community & Youth, and Ministry of Health, where she spearheaded numerous strategic communications, marketing, social media and branding projects for the organisations.

Claire’s last appointment at the government was as the Director of the Singapore (SG) Brand Office at the Ministry of Communications and Information (MCI). The Office represents the first time the Singapore Government set up a dedicated Office comprising joint efforts by the Singapore Tourism Board (STB), Economic Development Board (EDB), and MCI to look into the marketing and promotion of Brand Singapore. She was responsible for setting up the Office in 2019 aimed at building awareness, interest and support for the SG Brand among (i) all Government Ministries and Statutory Boards; (ii) Local Businesses; and (iii) Singapore public, with the objective of generating greater SG pride and stronger SG identity.

Amid setting up the SG Brand Office, Claire was also holding concurrent appointment as Director of the National Marketing Office - an entity she helped set up in 2017. Under her leadership, the Office established structures and mechanisms to facilitate all Government agencies’ marketing communications efforts and its effectiveness measurements. The Office oversaw the inaugural appointment of a central Master Media Agency that resulted in greater efficiency and consolidated savings for the government.

Prior to this, Claire was the first civilian to be appointed Director of Public Communications and Press Secretary in Singapore’s Ministry of Defence in 2014.

Since she left the government service, Claire served as the Senior Vice-President at Lazada’s Regional Office in Singapore, assisting the Lazada Group in their Employer Branding efforts. The eCommerce company has a presence in six countries in Southeast Asia (Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore). This is in addition to her role as a PR Consultant working with companies in the fin-tech, start-up, and venture capital space; while concurrently being a Public Presentation trainer at the Singapore Management University (SMU) Academy. She is also an Adjunct Faculty at SMU’s Lee Kong Chian School of Business offering courses to its Master of Science in Communication Management (MCM) and Master of Business Administration (MBA) students.

Outside work, Claire volunteers at Make-A-Wish Singapore as a Board of Director chairing its Marketing Communications Committee, while also contributing to its HR, and Finance Committees. She also serves as a Committee member at SPD, an organisation serving the needs of people with disabilities. Claire holds a PhD in Communications from the University of Missouri-Columbia, USA.
