Let’s get Associated!

Get to know the people behind Socium!

Socium is what it is because of the people who believe in it. We have started this series where we sit down and ask our associates 10 personal questions as we get to know our associates better. It’s not just about work here at Socium.

Check out what our Creative and Research Associate Jamie has to say!

  1. How would you describe your personal style?

My personal clothing style  is dependent on the mood I have on the day that I am heading out, however lately I’ve been riding on the oversize baggy trend. As for my design style, I enjoy being contemporary.

  1. If you could choose to do anything for a day, what would it be?

I would definitely like to travel to Space, although it’s not physically possible now but Space!! 🙌

  1. What is your favourite book?

Hands down, I totally enjoyed Harry Potter!! But I’ve been reading more non-fiction, like Educated by Tara Westover and Poor Economics by Abhijit V. Banerjee and Esther Dufloand , which just so happened to be one of the compulsory readings for one of my economics module this semester.

  1. Describe Socium in one sentence.

Socium helped me to discover and grow my artistic and design abilities.

  1. How are you enjoying your time at Socium?

It has been a joy meeting new people and making new friends! Socium has sparked my motivation to (re)start my tumblr account (which I just found out that I have 700 plus followers on tumblr and around 70 on Instagram). I also have plans to go into the videography realm with Ron!

  1. How do you motivate yourself in your role?

Just do it. #Nike LOL. But jokes aside, I would say that enjoying what I do in this role is important to keep me motivated and see the bigger picture of where my work will go on to.

With regard to motivation to get my hands dirty to do actual work, I would say that it’s (a lot) easier for me to get started on creative and design related projects as I don’t really see them as work work (you know what I’m trying to say). I am around six weeks back in school now, which also means I have not designed anything for a while, and my fingers are getting a little itchy. For actual work that is relatively more painful to do (haven’t really experienced this at Socium yet, but definitely the case in school), I will negotiate with myself such as perhaps finish a movie first before I start and then ensure that I will be working on it non-stop for minimally a full three hours.

  1. Where do you get your inspiration from?

I get my creative inspiration mainly from Pinterest, Tumblr and sometimes even from Instagram. To contextualise, I follow quite a few graphic design/ drawing Instagram accounts and sometimes I get inspired by their works. Pinterest is my go-to for colour palette as well which is the first thing that I will do when I get a design project! It’s really random, but I do spend quite a substantial amount of time on these platforms everyday.

  1. Aside from necessities, what’s one thing you could not go without for a day?

I can’t live without proper sleep. I need at least eight hours of sleep to function but now that school has started I’ve only been getting around five hours per day and my eye bags are very big now 🙁 But there’s a quote which goes like this “ My under eye areas may be dark, but my future will be bright. And that is more important”. Again, this is from Pinterest, but it’s #verytrue.

  1. What’s your favourite local dish?

I don’t have a particular favourite dish.  I enjoy Sichuanese and Chinese food (the non-spicy ones!). If I have to pick one dish, I’ll definitely choose chicken rice.

  1. Do you live by any piece of advice or motto?

Work smart, rest well and be confident!
